The Sound Divide, Blakk Sabbath, Rhys Breen
This week in the Schooner:
Wednesday – the world famous Schooner quiz. We’ve been full to capacity the past couple of weeks, so we’d advise booking a table fast!
Thursday – Schooner buskers hosted by the amazing Mr Tom Atkinson. We’ve an added competition too – come along to play and have a chance to win £500. And a gig at the Schooner. See our Facebook page for more details. Or just come along to enjoy good music.
Friday – The Sound Divide, a fantastic band with material from the Foo Fighters, Del Amitri, Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, AC/DC and much more. This is something you won’t want to miss.
Saturday – Blakk Sabbath, easily the best Sabbath tribute band in the Northeast. An astounding band.
Sunday – We end the week with an acoustic set from Rhys Breen. This guy’s pretty damn good.
Big Red and the Grinners
We’ve missed outdoor live musical the Schooner this year. We’re in the process of clearing the land next to the pub, with the aim of creating a new outdoor stage area.
We’re very conscious that we’ve had noise issues in the past, so we’re working with Gateshead Council to come up with an outdoor music solution that works for everyone.
We’d hoped for a test gig on Thursday 7th October. But, sadly, things are taking longer than we’d like.
So, our planned outdoor test gig, Big Red and the Grinners, will now be indoors. To keep things sensible, we’re limiting numbers too, so this is a ticketed gig. Tickets at just £5 are available from the pub or here.
We’ll post updates on social media, but we do expect tickets for this gig to sell-out quickly.
Ibiza Fest – Sunday 29 August
We’ve something new to the Schooner this Bank Holiday weekend; Ibiza Fest – Ibiza House Progressive Trance Classics. From 1:30. The pub might be busy, but you don’t need to book.
This does mean that Sunday’s food menu will be for takeaway only. We’ll be back with dine-in Sunday dinner next week though.
The Great British Beer Festival …
… at your local. We’ll have beer and pies. And live music.
In collaboration with Northern Alchemy’s THE LAB, we’re holding a beer, pie and music festival, starting Friday 30th July. Between the two bars, we’ll have 10 cask ales and hand crafted pies from Pitman’s, voted the UK’s number 1. We’ll also have a selection of vegan pies from Magpye.
Live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
12th Annual Schooner Bike Ride
The 12th annual Schooner bike ride will take place on Sunday 8th August.
This year, the Ride With Robbo event, will celebrate the life of Robbo, a favourite team member, resident and customer of the Schooner. This isn’t just a bike ride, it’s a social event with Schooner regulars, friends and family of Robbo, and anyone else who’d like to join in.
This is very much a fun bike ride, so all sorts of bikes are welcome. Fancy dress is encouraged. It’s not a race, so don’t worry about keeping up with the peloton. As usual, Wylam’s the destination and there’ll be opportunities to stop for refreshment.
Meeting at the Schooner at 10:00, the ride will set off at 11:00, arriving back around 4:30.
There’ll be bacon/sausage sandwiches and tea/coffee on arrival, and chilli on return. For anyone who’d like to stay for live music, we’ll have a great acoustic set from Jack Mylchreast around 6:30.
If you’d like to take part, the bike ride’s great value at just £10, £5 of which will go to Marie Curie Cancer Care.
To register, just come alone to the Schooner, or call the pub on 01914777404.
Great British Beer Festival
As part of the Great British Beer Festival, we’ve a Schooner/LAB beer, pie and music festival, 30 nJuly – 1 August.
Craft pies, craft beer, great music.
19 July 2021
We’re making some changes that’ll affect your experience at the Schooner, in line with the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions from 19 July.
So, if you’d like to order drinks, and food, at the bar, that’s fine. You can drink while standing too.
If you feel uncomfortable with that, just let us know and we’ll serve you at your table.
If you’d rather not wear a face covering inside the pub, you don’t need to. But please continue to wear one if that’ll make you feel safer.
If you’re uncertain about the change in regulations, about what is and isn’t allowed, ask us; we’ll do our best to help.
Big Phil Campion
The Schooner had a visit from author Phil Campion last night. A big guy with a truly big personality; a lovely bloke too!
Naturally, Phil pulled a pint too.
Live music’s back
We’re proud to be able to say that live music is returning to the Schooner.
We’ve some limitations due to the current situation; gigs will be socially distanced, indoors and not exactly loud, but they’re back!
To get things moving, next week looks something like this:
Tuesday 8th – Dean and Paul’s really good music quiz, 7:30. Let us know if you’d like to book a table.
Wednesday 9th – the World famous Schooner quiz, 7:00. Hosted by Chris McGeary. We always try to keep a free table or two, but we’d advise booking one.
Thursday 10th – Buskers at the Schooner, 8:00. No need to book; just turn up if you’d like to play or listen to some good music. Hosted by the incredible Mr Tom Atkinson.
Friday 11th – Russ Tippins, 8:00. You’ll probably already know that Russ is a seriously talented guy. An intimate indoor gig with seating for around 50.
Saturday 12th – CMS Presents
Sunday 13th – Rhys Breen, 6:00; Wallsend’s finest. Expect the best covers and a great night. Oh, and some fantastic original material too. We were chuffed to have had him booked for December 2020, but the second national lockdown messed that up.
