This week in the Schooner

This Week in the Schooner:

Tuesday 21st – Own Your Stage 18:00 – 20:00 Thirteen young musicians will use the outdoor stage to play to each other and any Schooner customers who’d like to watch. This is a great chance to catch some emerging talent. To maintain social distancing, the stage area will be reserved for artists and their families.

Wednesday 22nd – Schooner quiz night. Since the pub reopened, the quiz has returned in a big way. If you’d clike to take part, just come along. If you’ve a team, we’d advise booking a table.

Friday 24th – The ridiculously talented Russ Tippins will be live on the outdoor stage for an acoustic set. If you’ve seen Russ play, you’ll know how good he is. If you’re coming to see him for the first time, you’ll be blown away. Starts around 19:00.

Saturday 25th – The Kill, the premier Northeast rock band. Materiel from greats such as Van Halen, Foreigner, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Warrant and more.

Live around 19:00.

Sunday 26th – 17:45

1977. Arguably the best all-round punk cover band in the North.

The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Damned, Buzzcocks, Slaughter & The Dogs, Generation X, The Jam, Chelsea, The Adverts, Joy Division, Stiff Little Fingers, The Boys, Sham 69, Dead Boys, 999 and more.

For all live music performances, social distancing must be observed.

We’re back!

Well, our reopening weekend went really well. It was great to see both our valued regulars who’d stuck with our takeaway service and new customers who’ve discovered us during lockdown.

Without you, we wouldn’t still be here.

We’ll continue with takeaways, both food and drinks. Our new menu is available to eat in or take away.

The world famous Schooner two pint milk bottles are here to stay.

We need to do stuff

From 4th July we need to have some new processes to help protect our customers and staff.

At busy times, there’ll be a need to queue to enter the pub. Our bar staff are quite loud, so you’ll not miss your prompt to enter.

You’ll be able to order drinks and food from the bar, but drinking at the bar isn’t a thing right now. Cards or cash are accepted at the bar.

If you have a table, inside or out, you can put your feet up and we’ll serve you at your table. You’ll need to pay by card though.

Our toilets aren’t exactly spacious, so only two people can be in either the Ladies or Gents at any time. That means there’ll probably be a queue. Peeing in the bushes isn’t nice, so we’d advise planning your trip to the bogs in advance.

Don’t stand so close to me (did you know that Sting used to drink in the Schooner?). Please remember to maintain social distancing at all times while you’re with us.

Oh, we’ll need to ask you to give us your name, address and a contact number. We have a book for that. If you don’t want to touch it, we can give you a bit of paper.

Right, now that’s all said, we love you very much and we’re so happy to see you!

In common with many pubs, the Schooner will reopen on Saturday 4th July.

We’re taking bookings for tables and will probably operate table service during busy periods. We’ll do our best to accommodate everyone, even if you’ve not booked.

If you’d like to book a table, please email

Our seating will look something like this.

Gift vouchers

A few people have asked about Schooner gift vouchers, for special occasions. It’s not something we’ve done previously, but we can see that it’s a good idea.

So, we’re going to provide gift vouchers to people who’d like to treat someone. They can be ordered by phone or in person and payment can be made by card or cash.

We’ll email the voucher or can print one for collection.

The voucher can be used to buy food or drink, or both, at the Schooner. It can be used over the phone, giving the reference number printed on the voucher, or in person.

This week in the Schooner

The Schooner webpage (this one) is the best, static source of information about monthly gig listings, our menu and more. For up-to-date, on the day, information about a gig or event, best keep an eye on our social media in case of late changes.

Coming up this week:

Wednesday 17th Our weekly quiz, with quizmaster Chris. Free food, great prizes, 8:30 start. New people always welcome.

Thursday 18th Schooner Buskers’ night, hosted by the amazingly talented Michael Rolf. This isn’t your average Buskers’ night, this is a different level. Start time 8:30.

Friday 19th Back by popular demand, after they went down a storm a few weeks ago, Jonny Sax will be live at 8:30. For anyone who missed their last gig, you’ve a second chance to see what all the fuss was about. This duo make a great team, with soulful sax and strong vocals, covering a huge range of material. You’ll probably know every single tune, but these guys aren’t just another cover band. A must see.

Saturday 20th The Pistoleros will be live at 8:30. If you’ve not been lucky enough to come across them already, they’re a pretty diverse rock band, fusing together rock, blues, folk and punk and a whole lot more. This will be a fast paced, high octane gig.

Sunday 22nd We’re honoured to have music royalty, live in the Schooner this Sunday, at 6:00. Archie Brown and the Young Bucks. Professional standard, but you already know that, original music and some ultra-cool Blues covers. What a way to spend a Sunday evening!

OK, so we’re not exactly a cocktail bar. We do appreciate this. However, we’ve often been asked whether we serve cocktails.

So, we now do.

We’re offering three cocktails at a very reasonable price of £3.50 each.
